What to Wear for Your Headshots

Headshot Clothing Tips from Infinite Eye Photography

Planning your headshot session in Sherwood Park or Edmonton? Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, creating business content, or just looking for a fresh, confident look, what you wear plays a big role in your final image. Here are some expert tips from the Infinite Eye Photography team to help you feel confident and camera-ready.

👔 Keep It Simple – Stick to 1–2 Looks

For our Express or Essentials sessions, bring one dressy and one casual option. A quick change like removing a blazer or adding a scarf can completely refresh your look without using up your entire session time.

If you are booking our Extended session with the intention of getting more variety, then bring with you a few options - it’s better to have it and not use it than want it and not have it.

🎨 Contrast Matters

Choose clothing that contrasts with your skin tone. If you have a light complexion, avoid pale tones like soft yellow. If your skin is darker, steer away from navy, black, or dark brown. A little contrast helps your face stand out and adds depth to your headshot.

👓 Glasses? No Problem

If you wear glasses daily, wear them in your shoot. We have tricks to reduce glare, so don’t worry!

🎯 Keep the Focus on You

Avoid loud patterns, logos, flashy jewelry, and overly complex hairstyles. The goal for business headshots is to highlight your face and personality—not your outfit.

👗 Test Drive Your Outfit

Try on everything beforehand to make sure it fits well, looks great, and feels comfortable.

👖 Pants & Shoes? Don’t Sweat It

Since most headshots are waist-up, don't stress about what’s on your feet—but make sure your pants and top half look polished!

📌 Seek Inspiration

Scroll Pinterest or LinkedIn to find examples of headshots you love. What are they wearing? Use that as a guide.

📏 Fabric Thickness

Avoid sheer or overly chunky materials. Choose fabrics that hold their shape and flatter your figure without being too heavy.

🌈 Go-To Colours

Solid jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, navy, or charcoal photograph beautifully. Avoid neon and pure white unless layered under something darker. Go to colour as a second look if you are wanting to highlighting your brand or a specific theme.

Tips for Women

  • Test from Every Angle: We photograph standing up—check yourself in a mirror leaning forward and from the side to avoid surprises.

  • Simple Hairstyles: Keep your hair easy and natural.

  • Watch for Lines: Keep undergarments hidden and avoid visible seams or straps.

  • Jewelry: Less is more. Small earrings or a simple necklace tend to work best.

  • Necklines: V-necks and scoop necks are flattering. Avoid high necks (they can shorten your neck) or strapless styles (which may look awkward in cropped photos).

Tips for Men

  • Classic Combo: A button-down with a blazer or sweater is a clean, confident choice. It’s easy to dress up or down mid-session.

  • Haircut Timing: A cut a week before your session helps it settle naturally.

  • Facial Hair: Trim and tidy. Use a new razor or beard oil to reduce irritation and enhance sharpness.

  • Undershirts: If needed, choose a V-neck that matches your skin tone and stays out of sight.
